Day 1: The City of Tomorrow

Whether or not you are looking for a bustling city with a big night scene, or a great place to enjoy nature and its beauty, Yeosu city is the place to go.  In 2012, Yeosu will be holding the world Expo, where it boasts to uveil a brand new way to look at maritime construction in the future.  Its location just might be the best place to build a mega-maritime city, with easy axcess to both Japan and China. This city holds a bright future for tourism, hoping to build many new buildings and eco-friendly structures that boast to improve the environment.  In the next forty years, this city might just be the hottest place to plan a family vacation to.  Among other things, the expo plans to build a solar-powered energy part that will fuel most of the city's electricity.  It hopes to slowly restore the life and beuty of the sea and coast by reducing the waste and polution caused by man.  Because of this, it will soon be a major attraction to all those people who are  joining in the ever-growing "green" movement.  Enough talk of the future though, what about right now?

Although we are not living in 2050, we can still experience a little taste of the hopes of tomorrow.    Close your eyes and imagine this:  Wind is blowing past your face, causing a slight noise in your ear.  All around you, ocean and trees.  Why are there trees in the ocean?  They aren't; they are peacefully resting on cliffs which are jutting out of the water, begging any ship sailing by to come test its strength against the mighty rocks.  Luckily, there is a lighthouse just up ahead ready to give its warning to every passing ship.  Suddenly, your mind is taken off of the abstract picture in front of you as a small stream of water sprays you in the face.  Back to reality.  People all around you are experiencing the same thing as you.  As you think about the vast ocean around you, adventure floods your mind.  What goes on underneath all that water?  This is quiet the exhilerating experience.  Today we all had the opportunity to be a part of this story.  We departed the city on boats, and went on a grand tour of the sea.  Different things went through each of our minds as we saw new things and experienced new smells.  This wasn't the first thing we did today though.  This morning, different worlds colided as we all experienced new cultures together.  We played different games and things helping us in the crash course entitled: The 10th Yeosu International Youth Festival and Exchange Camp.  Each foreigner was given a "Korean Buddy".  The buddies are to become new friends who are to help us overcome the vast cultural differences.  Whether we are an australian, European, Korean or anything, we are all experiencing a culture different than ours.  Today we found out that we are much different from eachother, but isn't that the beauty of mankind?  We are all so unique and different, offering different things to the world to make it a better place.
Fastforward a little bit to after the sea tour, and you will find us feasting on a huge array of food with the mayor of Yeosu city himself.  Yes, that's right, the mayor of Yeosu City paid for us to eat like kings and queens at a fancy place by the name of Party Land.  Almost all of us could find a little bit of food from our own country, allthough we were much too busy gorging on everybody else's food, especially the korean food.  Have you ever heard of Kimchi?  I have, and probably any person that walks into a Korean home or restaurant.  Kimchi is the national food of Korea, and is served with most every meal.  Needless to say, the Kimchi wasn't in short supply at Party Land.
This is just the beginning of an explotion of culture, as we have only just finished day 1.  One can only imagine what the possibilties are in five whole days of a cultural free-for-all.  Hopefully life-long friendships will be created, along with a greater understanding of the world and its environment.  We look forward to the time we have together, and most of all we just want to have fun.
Signing off from day one,
